Suffolk is to be treated to a Shakespeare spectacular this summer – with a twist.
A modern take on the famous comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor, this production which will take place at Wingfield Barns aims to take its audience on a physical journey, moving set and scene through the beautiful gardens and spacious barns of the venue as part of the show.
The play is simply called Merry Wives and has been put together by Woodbridge producer and director Matthew Townshend.
It will star John D Collins, best known for his role as Lieutenant Fairfax in the BBC’s well-loved comedy ‘Allo ‘Allo! as Falstaff, who will be joined by a cast of other performers both professional and non-professional.
It will also feature younger actors from schools in the area.
Matthew Townshend said: “We plan to put on a riotous evening of entertainment for all the family.
“We encourage all to bring along a picnic and blanket, and join us in a beautiful setting for Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before.”
The play is to be held at Wingfield Barns, near Diss, IP21 5RA, on Friday 10 July from 6pm.
Matthew Townshend Productions has previously brought popular shows to the venue, including an evening with Neil Innes, the actor and musician famed for his involvement with Monty Python.
It also put on a millennium production of ‘The Mill on the Floss’ and ran a series of hugely popular Shakespeare workshops there for young people.
Tickets can be purchased through ticketsource (www.ticketsource.co.uk) and cost £12 for adults or £40 for a family of four.
