Theatre on the Coast

The Snow Queen

‘The Snow Queen’ is coming to Aldeburgh!

A new adaptation of one of the great fairy tale classics with plenty of contemporary reference is coming to Aldeburgh this Christmas.

Matthew Townshend Productions (mtp) brought a fresh new season of summer theatre to Southwold this year under the brand Theatre on the Coast. Audiences were bowled over:

‘Fabulous, excellent, super’, ‘Superb, wonderful – what energy!’, ‘Laugh out loud’, ‘We were amazed and delighted’

And now Theatre on the Coast is moving into another seaside town with The Snow Queen, a thrilling new version of the much-loved Hans Christian Andersen tale, which was first published in December 1844

The show features bandits, helpful reindeer, a wise old crow and the most magical story of loyalty, bravery and love. Set in a dystopian world of snow and cold, with some references not a million miles away from Phillip Pullman, plus quite a bit of steam punk strangeness, there will also be plenty of interaction and participation, so be ready to get involved and maybe even get on the stage!

The show tells the story of the adventures of friends Gerda and Kai. When Kai is stolen away by the Snow Queen, Gerda sets out on a dangerous journey to rescue him from her ice castle, solve the puzzle that will unfreeze his heart and bring him home again.

New music and songs for the production are being written and produced by Suffolk-based young musician and composer Ben Goble. Ben gained a Choral Scholarship to King’s College Cambridge and sang with the close harmony group The King’s Men, touring the world and making records with both the group and King’s College Choir. Over the past three years he has played at festivals around Europe, including Glastonbury.

Choreography is by Olivier award-winner Natasha Cox (Jerry Springer), whose appearance as Nurse MacFarlane in Hobson’s Choice at the end of this Summer season in Southwold earned her showstopping applause at each performance. Design is by Martin Robinson, who has worked with mtp since 2013, and lighting, sound and video by David and Alex Hermon at LX Professional.
