Shakespeare by the Sea (2016)
Synopsis
Shakespeare plays with a shipwreck twist will be brought together for an eagerly awaited new production from mtp.
Elements of Pericles, Prince of Tyre, The Tempest, A Winter’s Tale and Twelfth Night will be used in this year’s Shakespeare by the Sea.
All four plays involve characters shipwrecked, stranded in foreign lands, lost in storms at sea or cast away on strange and hostile shores.
The show follows in the footsteps of last year’s successful event – a modern take on the famous comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Last season was more popular than ever as it marked 400 years since the death of Shakespeare, the greatest poet and playwright in the English language.
The production has toured four venues, two of which were in the open air and featured a day of drop in workshops for the stars of the future.
The Martello Tower at Jaywick in Essex was the venue for the outdoor performance; music workshops for all will took place on Saturday 6th August followed by the performance of Shakespeare by the Sea the following Sunday, 7th August.
This format was replicated at Walton on the Naze.
A special indoor stage version of the show was held for audiences in Frinton on Sea on the evening of Friday 29th July.
Finally, the show toured into Suffolk, for a special weekend performance at Wingfield Barns.
