A modern adaptation of one of the great fairy tale classics is coming to Aldeburgh this Christmas.

Matthew Townshend Productions (mtp), who brought a new season of summer theatre to Southwold this year under the brand Theatre on the Coast is moving into another seaside town with The Snow Queen.

This is a thrilling new version of a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale which was first published in December 1844 and is set to dazzle audiences at Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall.

Matthew said: “We want to reinvigorate a fairy tale classic – staying true to the original but with the addition of choreography and music. The show features sleighs, bandits, helpful reindeer, a wise old crow and the most magical story of loyalty, bravery and love.

“I really can’t wait to see the response to all our hard work in Aldeburgh. After the success of the summer in Southwold, it’s wonderful to have the opportunity to branch out and reach audiences further along the coast especially during the Christmas period, making it extra special.”

The story surrounds the adventures of friends Gerda and Kai. When Kai is stolen away by the Snow Queen, Gerda sets out on a dangerous journey to rescue him from her frozen castle and bring him home again.

New songs for the production are being written and produced by upcoming musicians Ben Goble. Choreography is being handled by Olivier-winning Natasha Cox. Design is by Martin Robinson and lighting, sound and video by David and Alex Hermon at LX Professional.

The show opens on 27th December and runs through to Tuesday 31st December. For times and prices, visit www.mtproductions.co.uk.
